San Marcos Computers provides advanced data recovery for a wide variety of storage media. You do not necessarily need to bring us the entire computer. In many cases, you can bring us the storage device itself.
Our data recovery assessment is free. In most cases, we actually perform the recovery first so we can determine what data is recoverable before providing a quote.

Hard Drive Data Recovery
Mechanical hard drives can develop problems ranging from file-system corruption to serious drive failure. If the computer can no longer access important files, continued use of the drive can make the situation worse.
Our dedicated recovery equipment allows us to work with compatible SATA hard drives using controlled recovery techniques designed to minimize unnecessary reads of a failing drive.
SSD Data Recovery
Solid-state drives use different storage technology from traditional mechanical hard drives, but they can also experience failures that make stored information inaccessible.
We can work with compatible SATA SSDs as well as other supported solid-state storage configurations.
NVMe Data Recovery
NVMe storage is commonly found in newer desktop computers and laptops. Because NVMe devices use a different interface from traditional SATA drives, specialized connection equipment is required.
Supported NVMe devices can be connected to our recovery equipment using the appropriate RapidSpar USB Stabilizer and compatible adapter.
mSATA SSD Recovery
mSATA SSDs use a SATA-based storage interface but have a different physical connector from standard SATA drives.
Supported mSATA devices can be connected through our RapidSpar USB Stabilizer using the appropriate adapter.
External Hard Drive Recovery
External hard drives can fail for many of the same reasons as internal drives. Problems can involve the storage mechanism, electronics, connection hardware or file system.
If an external drive contains important information and is no longer accessible, avoid repeatedly reconnecting or attempting repairs. Bring the drive to us for assessment.
USB Flash Drive Recovery
USB flash drives are small and convenient, but they can also fail or become inaccessible.
Depending on the device and the nature of the failure, we may be able to recover information from a supported USB flash drive using our specialized recovery equipment.
Memory Card Recovery
Memory cards used in cameras, phones, drones and other devices can become corrupted, accidentally formatted or unreadable.
If important photographs, videos or other files are missing from a memory card, stop using the card and bring it to us for assessment.
Mac Storage Recovery
We can work with supported Mac storage devices as part of our data recovery service.
If your Mac will not start or you have a storage device from an older Mac containing important files, you may not need to bring the entire computer. Contact us if you are unsure what needs to be brought in.
How Our Storage Connections Work
Different storage devices use different physical interfaces. Our recovery equipment allows us to work with several of them.
Compatible standard SATA hard drives and typical 2.5-inch SATA SSDs can be connected directly to RapidSpar.
Other supported storage configurations can be connected through the RapidSpar USB Stabilizer using the appropriate USB adapter. This can include mSATA SSDs, NVMe storage, Mac storage and other compatible devices.
The USB Stabilizer is not limited to USB flash drives. It provides a way to connect various supported storage devices to the recovery system when a direct SATA connection is not appropriate.
Why Dedicated Recovery Equipment Matters
A normal computer is designed to access a working storage device. When a drive is failing, repeatedly asking the operating system to read the same damaged areas can result in unnecessary additional reads.
Dedicated recovery equipment provides more control over how a failing storage device is accessed and recovered.
Our recovery process is designed to obtain readable data while minimizing unnecessary access to areas of the drive that are already known to have problems.
RapidSpar and RapidNebula
We use RapidSpar professional data recovery equipment together with RapidNebula, a cloud-based recovery service.
RapidNebula can provide information about the connected storage device, including relevant characteristics and firmware information. This information helps determine appropriate recovery algorithms and techniques for the specific drive.
Controlled Recovery of Failing Drives
Our recovery methodology uses controlled imaging of the storage device.
When sectors can be read successfully, the recovered information is copied to a target drive. Those successfully recovered areas are not unnecessarily accessed again.
Problem sectors can be skipped and addressed later through additional recovery passes.
This approach minimizes unnecessary reads and helps reduce the risk of further degradation while the recovery process is being performed.
Recover First, Then You Decide
One of the most important parts of our data recovery service is what happens after the recovery process.
In most cases, we do not simply look at a failing drive and give you a guess about what might be recoverable. We actually perform the recovery first.
We can then determine:
- How much data was recovered
- What types of files were recovered
- Which folders and files were recovered
- Which files could not be recovered
- Which files may be corrupted or incomplete
When applicable, we can also provide an interactive HTML report showing the file and folder structure. You can drill down through the structure and see the recovery status of the files.
Once the recovery results are known, we provide a quote to transfer the recovered data.
If you accept the quote, we transfer the recovered data to an appropriate storage medium. If you decline the quote, no recovery fee is due.
What We Do Not Do In-House
We do not perform mechanical disassembly or internal component replacement on damaged mechanical hard drives.
Opening a mechanical hard drive and performing internal repairs requires specialized clean-room facilities. Attempting this type of work outside an appropriate laboratory environment can compromise the recovery.

When a storage device requires physical laboratory work beyond what we can safely perform in-house, we work with a specialized professional data recovery facility.
This gives customers another option when a case requires clean-room procedures or other specialized physical recovery work.
If Your Storage Device Is Failing
If the device contains important information, stop using it whenever possible.
Do not format, initialize or repeatedly attempt repairs on a drive containing important data. Additional use can make recovery more difficult.
